WAU Webinar March 2026: Neo-Imperialism, Intervention, and Knowledge Production

Anthropological Perspectives on Neo-Imperialism, Intervention, and Knowledge Production: Key Case Studies

Convener: Gabriel Gyang Darong (WCAA/Rhodes University, South Africa)

Panellists: Agafari Solomon (Jinka University, Ethiopia) Dafna Rachok (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, U.S.A.)

The webinar focused on anthropological perspectives of neo-imperialism, intervention, and knowledge production, with panelists discussing case studies from Ukraine, Russia, Venezuela, the United States, Palestine/Israel, and Ethiopia. The discussion explored how contemporary imperialism operates through indirect control and technological means, with panelists examining how global powers exercise influence through energy dependence, trade blockades, and digital platforms. The conversation highlighted the challenges of conducting ethnographic research in dangerous contexts while maintaining ethical standards, and debated the role of anthropologists in speaking out against imperial actions. The panelists also discussed the importance of hearing multiple voices, including those who support imperial powers, and considered how anthropology can contribute to understanding and resisting neo-imperialist practices in the modern world.
