IUAES is a world organization of scientists and research/corporate institutions working in the fields of anthropology and ethnology, but also of interest to archaeologists, linguists, human geographers, political scientists, public health scholars, educators, etc. IUAES is the world’s largest and oldest global forum for anthropologists.
IUAES is the world’s largest and oldest global forum for anthropologists. Founded in 1948 but with predecessor organizations dating back to 1865, the IUAES’s activities and membership reflect the broad epistemological and methodological continuum that makes anthropology unique as a discipline situated at a dynamic pluricultural and transnational crossroads of scientific, social–scientific, and humanistic knowledge. The organization’s (now WAU) world congresses organized every four years and the annual congresses, its commissions, and public engagements have set the stage for the role it has played as the discipline’s ambassador within interdisciplinary arenas in the global context.
The International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES), together with the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA), form the World Anthropological Union (WAU) – an inclusive, cooperative forum that invigorates transnational anthropologies.
